Utilizing CEFR in business

What is CEFR?

CEFR, or the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is a standardized framework created in Europe to measure the 'proficiency and language use capabilities' of foreign language learners. Released in 2001(i)and updated in 2018(ii), it's widely used in both academic and business contexts, including by Japan's Ministry of Education for evaluating English in their new curriculum guidelines.

Main features include:

1. CEFR is a universal framework for language proficiency across different languages.
2. It uses CAN-DO descriptors to show real-world abilities rather than theoretical knowledge.
3. It encourages learners to be self-directed in their studies.

How companies can use CEFR:

・Use tests that are CEFR-compliant.
・Evaluate proficiency in the four English skills in a common standard.
・Design and implement training using CAN-DO descriptors(iii).
・Apply in talent management and other areas.
